Session 2 July 18-23
Geof Herman–Madison Memorial High School Ceramics Instructor

In the middle of a lovely Wisconsin summer a group of 20-30 ceramic artists of all ages and abilities will meet at Scotty’s studio: a truly marvelous creative space that has enjoyed this confluence of artists for many years. What happens there could best be described as magic. Artists will utilize much of the studio’s equipment and materials to test out new ideas, refine an emerging style, expand their creative options and participate in the daily (and evening!) activities which foster increased awareness of self, of the intent behind their creations while developing rich relationships with the other artists sharing the studio space. This comes naturally and comfortably in this warm space tucked inside a beautiful landscape.
Presentations and demonstrations featuring a variety of wheel-thrown functional forms will be presented on a daily basis. Techniques on altering ceramic works through form, surface and appendages will be provided. Surface options include colored slips, wax resist, fluting, faceting, paddling, impression and other techniques.
Sculpting with ceramics is also offered in this workshop–this can be expanded upon should the members of the workshop request it. Modeling with clay to create human figures, hump-mold-based forms, plaster face molding, slab construction, soft-slab construction, assemblage with wheel created forms and more will be presented. Each artist has the full independence to explore their interests; however, everyone is encouraged to try out something new (it will happen anyway!).
Firing options are limited due to the length of the workshop–the focus on this workshop is truly on expansion, production and refinement. If there is interest and enough greenware we can fire a bisque load midweek of the workshop. A demonstration on raku firing will make for a dramatic evening experience. Pit-firing and other alternative firing techniques will be discussed and attempted should there be interest and the appropriate conditions and materials be present.
Each workshop participant can expect to leave the Communing with Clay workshop very satisfied with the range of experiences offered: s’mores with Eyleen, American Players Theatre (backstage tour sometimes available!), hikes through the valley and to the various bluffs, scrumptious food (nutritious, too!), excellent feedback and critiques from other artists, and a body of work that reveals your growth in technique, knowledge of form, evolution of a personal style and artistic verve! Please feel free to address any questions concerning this particular workshop to Geof Herman geofherman@gmail.com. This opportunity is the perfect accent for the middle of a memorable summer! Bring a friend!
